Entrepreneurs: The B-Quadrant
OK, I am out of the
"E" and "S" quadrants, and I believe I have the "I" quadrant under
control. So now...I am working on the "B" ... and working ...
and working!!! Buying Real Estate is a piece of cake compared
with starting a business. Let me repeat that in another way -
building the "B" is more work than I EVER would have thought
possible. I am currently working on a number of different
businesses, namely direct advertising, new Home construction,
and of course, Financial Literacy. Anyway, operating in the B quadrant is very time
consuming, expensive and difficult. BUT...I do not report to anyone
except myself...
I want to have the "B" that Robert Kiyosaki writes about...
"Operating a business from day one with a sole purpose
- the ability, after 12 to 18 months, to have others run the company
better than I ever could have."
I want my "B" quadrant to have the ability to grow, whether I oversee the businesses or not. The only way that this is possible is to have great people on your team, which I am assembling currently. I also believe that they must share a common vision of where the business is going to be, and how everyone will benefit.
Entrepreneurial Spirit has always been a part of me, even as a young kid. I can always remember earning money one way or another. Whether it was earning money by teaching skating, cutting grass, or refereeing hockey. I have always had a knack for looking at different opportunities and turning them into learning experiences, which have helped me to get to where I am today with my various businesses. Every single business venture, whether it was a simple T-shirt company back in University, or my first "Full-Time" business selling Inuit Art, in my early twenties, has taught me a great deal. I only wish that the Professors could have taught me how to build a “business” in University! (I always wondered why I had to consolidate two balance sheets of Multi-National Corporations, in my 4th year accounting, when they did not teach me how to incorporate a Company or deal with a bank, or even apply for a Business Number???)
Well, I now realize that all of the lessons I have learned are due to, as Robert would say, “incompetence.” Every time you make a mistake, learn from it – and everyone makes mistakes. I will not get into examples here, but believe me, whether it is myself, a team member, or someone else in a different organization, mistakes are GOING to be made. Learning from them is the key.
TOP 10 LESSONS IN OPERATING A TRUE "B"
- Everything takes LONGER than you anticipate.
- Everything COSTS MORE than you anticipate.
- Everything is MORE DIFFICULT than you anticipate.
- Sales minus expenses is PROFIT.
- No sales means NO PROFIT.
- Almost no one shares YOUR vision.
- Find people that believe in your VISION.
- Do not associate with people who do not believe in your VISION.
- Celebrate EVERY win/sale.
- Operate with a true “B” mentality from day ONE.
THE ENTREPRENEUR WALK
This was the walk that I took when I said good-bye to the “S” Quadrant
and all of the bullying tactics of the Big “B.” I walked out, through
the office door, knowing that I would never return, confident in my abilities….this
is the Entrepreneur Walk. Everyone can do it, with a little courage, belief
and confidence. Although scary for the first few months, I am now over
the fear of a “paycheque” and can focus on opportunities that appear daily.
There are so many opportunities that I literally cannot keep up with all of the different ways to make money. I always had an eye for opportunities, but now that I have TIME to look, it is amazing how many are out there. Deals now find me. I don’t know how to explain it, but it is reality. Distributorships, franchises, MLM’s, exclusive arrangements, new product offerings, Speaking engagements, Investments opportunities, Real Estate deals… Every time I explore another uncharted avenue, I learn, or as RK would say, I increase my "Context."
Make a pact with yourself - and commit to trying the ENTREPRENEUR WALK. What do you have to lose; you can always find another JOB. Plan, execute and do the WALK. Do it. Tell me about it, share your story. You will never look back. If you are still unsure, think for a minute about all of the incompetent business owners in the World that actually succeed - Now think, HOW can I do the WALK.
E-mail me and share your story if you have done the WALK. That's all for now.
See you at the Top.
