Joanne Beehler picked up the phone to call one of her classmates. She was attending a hands-on course about investing in real estate in the Ottawa area. “I found a duplex I'd like to check out,” said Joanne. “Do you want to come with me to take a look?” How could they know the direction their lives would take after a simple phone call?

Her classmate Paul Blacquiere said, “Sure. What's the address?” It was an area of town they knew very well...the type of area where the properties were run down, sometimes with less than desirable occupants. They had seen dozens of properties like this with their classmates, so they knew what was good and what was junk.

Their business relationship took root that day. After viewing the property, they decided to go for it. Within 24 hours they had placed an offer, drafted a joint venture agreement, had the offer accepted, and began gathering the money needed for the down payment.

Paul recalls the time immediately after that being very stressful. “Once the offer was accepted things really snowballed,” said Paul. “We had to deal with lawyers, bankers, appraisers, contractors, and of course tenants. After closing we somehow managed to renovate a two-bedroom apartment in just two weeks and have it rented for the beginning of the following month! It was an insane time for us.”

Less than a year later they bought a triplex, but with both still holding full time jobs they quickly realized they needed help. Joanne and Paul decided to hire a property manager and then focus their energy on systemizing their investing. “We started living again when we hired LPMG Property Management (www.lpmg.ca) to manage our properties,” said Joanne. “Working with them gave us the freedom to spend what time we had left in a day on the things that mattered most to us...like buying more properties.”

It was shortly after this that they discovered Darren's web site and convinced him to hold his first ever CASHFLOW event in Ottawa. “It was a tremendous success with over 70 people in attendance! Darren was blown away by the turnout,” says Paul. “After that Darren became a mentor and a coach to us, as well as a really good friend. He often stretched our thinking about business and investments, leading us down paths we had never even considered.”

Both Joanne and Paul credit Darren with the idea of taking their real estate investing to the next level. Attending his 2003 Business Super Conference caused them to reevaluate how they were treating their investing. It had become more like a business, and they needed to start treating it as such. They spent a considerable amount of time in 2004 creating their business identity and launching their marketing campaign.

They are now the owners of Spirepoint Properties, a real estate investment company that offers the best in passive real estate investments. One of the first marketing tools they implemented was a free newsletter to educate people on real estate investing and profile their latest investment opportunities.

“Darren gave us the idea of publishing a newsletter,” said Paul. “He has been instrumental in our success by encouraging us to take action in both our business and personal lives. We highly recommend that everyone attend one of his events. It will absolutely change your life.”
