June's Success Story
In 2001, Joanne and I stumbled across an intriguing book called Rich Dad Poor Dad and bought because we thought it would be good for our daughters to read. Little did I know what would happen next... Joanne and I couldn’t read enough of Robert Kiyosaki’s books and to say a light bulb went off in my head would be an understatement.
In one of Robert Kiyosaki’s books there was an insert that I found very handy to use as a bookmark. When I finished the book I studied the insert only to discover that it was advertising a seminar that was to take place in a couple of weeks. Some guy by the name of Darren Weeks was coming to Ottawa to promote the Rich Dad philosophy. We thought "What the heck, it sounds interesting" and signed up. I now try to attend every Fast Track event I can because I love what Darren has to say and thrive on the opportunity to be with all these people of like mind.
Back when we first purchased Rich Dad Poor Dad we were also starting to play the game of real estate. Since our eldest daughter, Jen, was heading off to school we decided to purchase a triplex for her to live in. Since that time we have sold our seasonal resort and I’m now a full-time real estate investor. We’ve bought and sold many properties over the past six years and we currently own 55 doors and a very successful property management company. I became so busy that we hired our daughter full-time so she could do the property management and we have become so busy that Joanne will soon be leaving her full time job to work with us as well.
The truly wonderful thing about this business is that it is continually changing and evolving. A large part of our current business is lease options. Doing lease options is a very rewarding experience because we are able to help people acquire a home - people who might not normally be able to qualify for conventional financing - and this is very gratifying.
Since attending our first Fast Track event we’ve owned and played the CASHFLOW 101 game and we weren’t at all surprised to see how quickly our three daughters learned to play. I was surprised to see how much of a challenge the game was initially for their boyfriends and that’s when I realized that what Robert Kiyosaki says is very true – the school system does not teach financial literacy. What’s been even more surprising is watching other adults play the game only to discover that many of them truly don’t understand the very basics of financial management. These observations were always in the back of my mind and once I started in the lease option business I quickly realized that what these adults didn’t know or understand in the CASHFLOW game carries over into their financial lives. I’ve since discovered that there are so many people in our society operating on a daily basis with little or no financial understanding, even at a very basic level. What is even more disturbing is that these same adults are teaching their children their money management skills because it certainly isn’t being taught in our schools.
As a result of this revelation I have become passionate about educating people about financial literacy. I wanted to develop a way to expose people to this information and decided to begin by working with the youth who will become our future. I approached our local school to see if they would allow me to volunteer my time to speak with the children about money and then play the CASHFLOW game with them. Jen and I recently went into a grade eight class in one of our local schools and spent three periods with the students to talk about money and play the game with them. We were really impressed to see how much some of the kids actually knew about money and the level of interest they had in learning about making money. They picked up on the concept of the game quite quickly (certainly more quickly than some adults we have played with) and I felt that we were able to really teach them the difference between good debt and bad debt. I knew they were really catching on when we played the game for a second time and you could hear voices throughout the classroom saying things like, "Yeah, I’m a janitor!"
It was a great success and extremely rewarding for me personally. I have since been approached to see if I can come back and repeat the program for a second grade eight class, as well as a grade ten class in our local high school.
One of the main people I have to thank for this opportunity is Darren Weeks. His passion for helping others has been a great inspiration to me and I now truly understand about giving first with no expectations in return. Darren and his advisors/speakers have helped us in many other ways as well, too many to list. I think one of the biggest things we have learned from Darren is that we must treat our real estate as a business and structure it as such in order to become successful.
I look forward to attending all of Darren’s future events and want to help and learn as much as I can from him.

I thought Akash was insane for making me get up at 6:30 on a Saturday morning (I live quite a distance out of Vancouver) and spend my whole day there. But during the seminar, I can say that my outlook on the financial aspect of my life had totally changed.
