I first met Kevin Meldrum at a Fast Track to Cash Flow event in Ottawa. While he's certainly been a great supporter of Fast Track, I've also had the pleasure of getting to know Kevin on a more personal level. It was shortly after attending the 2004 Business Super Conference that he launched Kitchen Pilots. I've seen an amazing transformation take place in Kevin where he's become more confident and ready to tackle his fears and hesitation around self-employment. The Story of Kitchen Pilots
In May 2003, Kevin Meldrum, an Ottawa software designer, made a big decision. He had just moved from a prestigious neighbourhood to a "less desirable" one, making a fair amount of money in the move. His wife Tania was on parental leave from her job as a high school teacher after giving birth to their daughter Jacqueline in September 2002. His high-tech employer had forced a 10 percent cut in his salary in the summer of 2002 and Kevin's job had become more "important" (really stressful) because of changing priorities in the company. So, he handed in his letter of resignation and became self-employed in order to have more control over his life and be able to spend more time with his family.
Then, in December 2003, Kevin got a new idea for a business. Since 2000, Kevin and Tania had been using a system of meal planning from a cookbook called Life's on Fire. It had completely transformed their dinnertime from a stressful experience, often ending in take-out food, to a low-stress routine that produced tasty, healthy dinners. Kevin really heard the advice that "you succeed by helping people", so decided that he could help people by teaching them about meal planning.
The business idea slowly came together over the spring and summer; and by the end of summer the new business had a name, Kitchen Pilots, and a professionally designed logo.
Darren was incredibly helpful with the development of Kitchen Pilots, both directly and indirectly. Early on Darren talked to Kevin about the seminar business - offering concrete advice; and the Fast Track to Cash Flow 'Advisor Series' showed Kevin how important it is to establish a distinct business identity early on.
Kevin even met Wayne Mitchell (www.redcaddy.com), who designed the Kitchen Pilots identity, and Susan Englehutt, the marketing consultant for Kitchen Pilots, at a Fast Track to Cash Flow event!
Interestingly, it was the 2004 Business Super Conference in October that pushed Kevin to get Kitchen Pilots off the ground without delay. The excellent speakers at the event, as well as Darren's call to action were "what the doctor ordered".
Kitchen Pilots gave its first meal planning seminar on December 1, 2004. Since then progress has been slow yet noticeable. Events in January and early February were successful and Kitchen Pilots currently has three events booked for March. Kitchen Pilots now gives seminars to the public and organizations, sells the cookbooks that started it all and an internationally known line of storage and kitchen products (Tupperware).
Kevin is confident that Kitchen Pilots will give him the opportunity to watch his daughter grow up, while paying the bills through helping people live healthier, less stressful lives. Hard to beat that!
